At a very young age the desire for her to be engaged in sport was strong. Gerina started playing golf at the age of 15. Gerina completed her High School studies through Goddard High School. As a high school student, Gerina was the winner of in the New Mexico golf state tournament. She was also a volleyball player who competed at the state level. She went to in the University of Texas in 2003. While in her senior years she took home the top prize in every competition she entered. In the course of her undergraduate studies she won the titles that included Conference USA Female Athlete and Conference USA Individual Player of the year.
